Sr. Systems Engineer

8:00am - 6:00pm Monday through Thursday

POSITION SUMMARY:

This position provides support as part of the NSE team with all aspects of the local and collocated data center environments. This includes designing, monitoring, supporting, and securing the physical hardware, virtual hardware, operating systems, and applications.

 

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Performs duties related to the installation and management of server operating systems and application software.
  • Optimize configuration and design of the data center environments and the applications they host.
  • Performs application upgrades.
  • Performs data backup and recovery.
  • Responsible for in downloading, installing, and monitoring of patches for server hardware, operating systems and applications.
  • Responsible for the monitoring, maintaining, and securing the physical environments of all data centers which includes responding to events which may threaten the security and safety of the equipment and more importantly the data therein.
  • Responsible for gathering system requirements for new projects.
  • Responsible for designing and configuring the servers and applications for high availability.
  • Responsible for working with other teams to resolve complex network, operating system, and application issues.
  • Responsible for working with other teams on designing and implementing systems.
  • Create and modify advanced shell scripts to automate day-to-day tasks with the ability comprehend and reproduce complex algorithms.

  • Cross train, document and inform other team members on operational tasks.
  • Create detailed procedures, checklists, troubleshooting documentation, and contribute to the team knowledge base.
  • Mentor other team members for cross training on advanced data center administration techniques, configuration, and concepts.
  • Research, recommend, and apply available technologies to achieve business objectives and goals.
  • Keep professional skill set relevant. This often requires outside work activities related to improving knowledge such as reading, training or preparing for certification.
  • Monthly maintenance and patch cycle: must be available on nights, and weekends to participate in monthly patch and maintenance operations as required which may include onsite shifts.
  • May require travel in the support of Ministry Events including the administration of a mobile network and server environment.

Qualifications

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

 

Education and Experience:

  • Work experience equivalent to or Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Management Information      Systems or related field preferred.
  • Current Network and Operating System Certifications preferred

 

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Must have a thorough understanding of networking, Active Directory, backup and recovery, and data center hardware including network switches, network appliances, servers, and storage (Nimble experienced preferred).
  • Must have a thorough understanding of various LDAP concepts. Experience with ADSI Edit or other LDAP administration tools aside from ADUC or ADAC is a plus.
  • Must have a thorough understanding of firewalls and network security.
  • Must have a thorough understanding of the Windows Registry and be able to backup and restore, modify keys, create keys, and create registry merges.
  • Must have a thorough understanding of Group Policy Objects and how this relates to security and administrative restrictions on servers and workstations.
  • Must have a thorough understanding of file, share permissions and related concepts in multiple operating systems (Windows/Linux); VMware experience preferred.
  • Proficient in Windows Server 2003/2008/2012 and higher, Exchange 2013, Windows Clustering, Linux CentOS 5 and 6.       MySQL 5.x experience preferred, (AWS) Amazon Web Service experience preferred, Microsoft Office 365 experienced preferred.
  • Must be able to independently learn and implement new technologies by utilizing readily available resources (install guides, white papers, internet resources, etc.)
  • On-Call rotation: must be available on nights, weekends, and holidays to support a 24x7 environment which may include onsite operations at times.
  • High level of analytical skills to find solutions to technical and system problems.
  • Interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with all levels of supervisory and non-supervisory employees
  • Confident, self-starting, and goal–oriented.

  • Standard office equipment and current technologies

 

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Must be able to sit at a computer for a minimum of eight hours per day.
  • Requires manual dexterity sufficient to operate standard office machines such as computers, fax machines, calculators, telephones and other office equipment.
  • Must be able to carry up to 50 lbs. and sometimes lift up 50 lbs. overhead.
  • May require running network cabling.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Works in a normal/typical office environment.
